چکیده

In the present paper we prove the main structure theorem for Chevalley groups G = G(Φ, R) of types Φ = E6,E7 over a commutative ring R. More precisely, we describe subgroups in G normalized by the elementary subgroup E(Φ, R). This result is not new, since structure theorems are known for all Chevalley groups [25, 27, 28, 30], [38]–[40], and [58, 61] (see [42, 65, 34, 56] for further references). The gist of the present paper resides not in the results themselves, but rather in the method of their proof based on the geometry of exceptional groups. We believe that this method is novel and of significant interest. Actually the Schwerpunkt of the present paper abides in a new descent procedure, which enables reduction to groups of smaller rank. This procedure is both simpler and more powerful than any other method known today. Our results on the geometry of the 27-dimensional module for Chevalley groups of type E6 and of the 56dimensional module for Chevalley groups of type E7 pave the way to much more general results such as description of subgroups normalized by some of elementary matrices. Groups of types E8 and F4 can be handled in essentially the same style, and we intend to return to these cases in our subsequent publications. However, from a technical viewpoint the proofs in these cases are noticeably more involved because these groups do not have microweight representations.

A2-proof of Structure Theorems for Chevalley Groups of Type

A new geometric proof is given for the standard description of subgroups in the Chevalley group G = G(F4, R) of type F4 over a commutative ring R that are normalized by the elementary subgroup E(F4, R). There are two major approaches to the proof of such results. Localization proofs (Quillen, Suslin, Bak) are based on a reduction in the dimension. The first proofs of this type for exceptional g...

Identity with Constants in a Chevalley Group of Type F4 v. Nesterov and A. Stepanov

N. L. Gordeev proved that a generalized group identity holds in Chevalley groups with multiply laced root systems. It was also shown that a stronger identity is valid for the Chevalley groups of types Bl and Cl. In the present paper, it is proved that this strong identity is fulfilled in Chevalley groups of type F4 and fails to be true in Chevalley groups of type G2. The main result of the pape...

Can One See the Signs of Structure Constants?

It is described how one can see the signs of action structure constants directly in the weight diagram of microweight and adjoint representations for groups of types E6, E7, and E8. This generalizes the results of the preceding paper, “A third look at weight diagrams”, where a similar algorithm was discussed for microweight representations of E6 and E7. The proofs are purely combinatorial and c...

Groups and Ultra-groups

In this paper, in addition to some elementary facts about the ultra-groups, which their structure based on the properties of the transversal of a subgroup of a group, we focus on the relation between a group and an ultra-group. It is verified that every group is an ultra-group, but the converse is not true generally. We present the conditions under which, for every normal subultra-group of an u...

Semisimple Algebraic Groups in Characteristic Zero

It is shown that the classification theorems for semisimple algebraic groups in characteristic zero can be derived quite simply and naturally from the corresponding theorems for Lie algebras by using a little of the theory of tensor categories. This article is extracted from Milne 2007. Introduction The classical approach to classifying the semisimple algebraic groups over C (see Borel 1975, §1...
